Professional Work Experience and Training
Many people are concerned that immigrant engineers are not able to get work in engineering positions. The Pilot Project provided an opportunity to study the issues and test a new work experience and training approach. The Pilot Project offered free skills assessments, customized training and job-matching services for *twenty people. We gained many insights from this experience that we hope will inform future work experience and training initiatives.Training
The participants completed a self-assessment of their skills and training needs. Professional Engineers, human resource specialists and English language specialists also assessed their skills and experience. The participants then took training courses and workshops to improve their skills. Customized training workshops were developed for the Pilot. Topics included. for example, cross-cultural understanding, job-search, confidence building, labour market research and AutoCAD 2000. The participants also took the APEGBC Law and Ethics seminar. Some training funds were available to participants for other training courses, materials and learning opportunities to improve English, communication and technical skills. These funds allowed training to address individual needs.
The participants are not the only ones who received training. APEGBC staff have benefited from special training in communication, website design, cultural sensitivity and plain language skills.
Work Experience
Career development specialists helped participants with career plans and job searches. In addition, they met with over 60 employers, studied the job market and identified possible job matches. These specialists also kept in touch with employed participants and their engineering employers.*Please note that the Professional Work Experience and Training component is now complete. The Pilot Project is a one-time research project. It will not be repeated. We are not able to accept any more participants. We are not keeping a waiting llst of future participants.
