    Skilled Migration Enquiries
    Geelong & Colac Region

Information Sheet: November / December 2005

This material has been collated to provide information to migrants making enquires from outside the Geelong & Colac Region. It provides a basic guide, offers links to a variety of sources and is intended to assist future Migrants in making informed decisions about living and working in the region.

The region is well serviced by 5 Local Government councils through: City of Greater Geelong, Colac Otway Shire, Surfcoast Shire, Borough of Queenscliffe and Golden Plains Shire. The regions major towns include: Geelong, Colac, Apollo Bay, Lorne, Torquay, Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove, Queenscliffe, Portarlington and Bannockburn.

The region is home to over 13,000 businesses varying from manufacturing through to agriculture. There is a strong emphasis on the health sector, as this industry services a population of just over 250,000.

    Skills in Demand
Employers across the Geelong and Colac Region are seeking highly skilled and experienced staff with specialist knowledge in their skill area together with confident English language skills. Skilled Migrants seeking to migrate should seek advice about their skill area prior to arriving to ensure that their skill base reflects qualifications and experience being sought by employers. On arrival some Skilled Migrants may need to engage in additional training to achieve parity with Australian skill standards. This training will incur extra costs that must be factored into their settlement planning budget.

Note that limited opportunities exist for new graduates. International students currently studying in Australia should seek work experience and placement opportunities while studying, with the intention of building a network in their future area of employment and obtaining local referees.

The Geelong & Colac Region Skills Research Report, November 2005, identified skill shortages in the following areas:
    • Construction and Building Industry: opportunities exist in the building sector including traditional building trades and construction engineering.
    • Health & Allied Health including Medical Research & Biotechnology: region wide shortages exist in general and specialist nursing fields, allied health areas and pathology services.
    • Manufacturing: shortages exist within the manufacturing sector, particularly in steel fabrication and associated processes.
    • Chefs & Hospitality Staff: businesses are seeking staff that are highly skilled and experienced in food preparation and hospitality services.

The Region is about to participate in a Skills Audit, this process will define skill shortages and allow targeted matching. Where Migrants meet the skill shortage definitions they may be eligible to

    Hola Daniela,

    Saludos,

    Enrique.-
